Toshiba laptops weigh on average about 5 lbs. and feature software for daily computing needs. Generally, you can find older ones with the Windows 7 Home Premium OS as well as other versions, both older and newer.

What Are Some Differences Between the Home Premium and Professional Version of Microsoft Windows 7?

Overall, they offer the same functionality across the board, and any difference would not affect many users. However, if the following aspects are key to your needs, consider upgrading to the Professional version.

  • Memory: The Premium version allows only up to 16 GB of RAM, while the Pro version can accommodate up to 192. However, 16 GB is more than enough for light and moderate usage, so many users will find 16 GB of RAM or less more than sufficient for their daily computing needs.
  • Backup: Both OS versions can offer backups to the local hard drive and DVDs; however, Pro users can also backup to some form of network storage, such as another computer on the network or a network-attached storage device.
  • File Encryption: Only available in the Pro version, Encrypting File System (EFS) helps secure your files for an extra layer of protection. Only users with the proper 'key' can access sensitive files and data.

How Do You Select a Laptop to Suit Your Lifestyle?

  • Light Usage: Computers with Intel Core processors don't lag behind when completing more than one task. Models are equipped with vPro technology so when a computer problem arises, your IT specialist can make repairs remotely. For everyday computing, 2 or more GB of RAM sufficiently handles lighter workloads.
  • Medium Usage: In addition to standard features like USB ports and Wi-Fi connectivity, computers with 250 to 500 GB storage capacities have room for various apps, games, presentations, spreadsheets, and documents you use at work or home.
  • Heavy Usage: When you play games often, use resource-heavy software, or have a lot of media, models with 500 GB to 1 TB of storage accommodate large files, downloads, and thousands of photos. Devices with i5 processors and newer offer up to four cores so the computer performs optimally while completing multiple tasks at once. Look for at least 8 GB of RAM as well.

What Models of Laptops Does the Company Make?

The company makes a wide range of models, including the following examples.

  • Toshiba Satellite: Produced until 2016, earliest models have CD-ROM drives. Beginning in 2000, the company started putting DVD drives in their laptops.
  • Protege: This lightweight series is designed for on-the-go usage due to their portability. Because of their long battery life, you can use them for extended periods without needing a power outlet.
  • Tecra: Depending on the model, computers may have Pentium III or Intel Core processors. Fingerprint screen readers help keep your data private and secure.

Ownership: more than 1 year

Pros: You get what you pay for. it ran fine.

Cons: hard drive failure after about a year

Other Thoughts: had it for a while, I bought it for my wife to use for school. I wasn't happy with the performance as far as minecraft or internet is concerned. It always seemed to take forever to downloan anything. or even open a page. bootup took approximately 4 min after discontinuing nonessential bootup programs.

C655

Pros: Cheap, not too heavy, and easy to use. Good for someone like your grandma.

Cons: It is flimsy, wireless card damage is easy to deal. Absolutely TERRIBLE for any activities other than surfing the web and using MS Office. Can't run most basic games (MineCraft, etc.) without intense lag. AMD E-Series is an extremely slow processor, frequently going to 90+% utilization when just on Chrome.

Other Thoughts: Note: I had Win8 on it, but still same computer.

Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Toshiba Satellite C655 Factory Reconditioned Network Controller Driver Windows 7

Ownership: more than 1 year

Pros: Fully convinced that Windows (all versions) and Mac OS X (all versions) are worthless operating systems as far as security goes, I decided to buy a cheap laptop and install Debian. Why pay more for a Mac if you're going to install something better?
Therefore, I bought a Toshiba Satellite, (Model-Part Number:PSC16U-03504W), aka C655D, for $357 and installed Debian, and everything was great for about a year. The CPU is fast enough for everything and the wireless works well.

Cons: The pathetic, plastic casing on this laptop is worthless. Opening and closing the lid creates small, internal cracks. Then it literally falls apart. This is NOT a case of screws getting loose. This laptop was not dropped or exposed to low or high temperature, etc.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this laptop unless you are going to keep the lid open or closed all the time.
Many Toshiba Satellite have problems from opening and closing the lid.

Ownership: more than 1 year

Pros: Nicesizescreenandnoproblemswithaddingmemory.Itdoeseverythingthatmydaughterneedsforhercollageclasses.

Cons: None

Comments: Remember it is an E-Series processor meant for saving battery life and casual net surfing. Not your typical average laptop. the only thing that's average is the 15.6in screen and the radeon gpu.

Comments: I have read some reviews about people not liking the keyboard on the satelites. To each their own I guess. I really like the keyboards. Also i read that spme people say they look and or feel cheap. I dissagree. I think they are pretty well built and seem sturdy. Maybe thats just me coming from a flimsy junk DELL. In my opinion thats a garbage cheap feeling hunk of junk laptop.
